Daniel O'Connell's Birth Place

Over the bridge and just outside of Cahersiveen is Daniel O'Connell's birthplace. Known as "The Liberator", he managed to achieve Catholic Emancipation. Although the house is now in ruins, it is easy to see that it was quite substantial at one time and perfectly sited for his father's smuggling business. Across the river is a pleasant picnic area. A bust of Daniel O'Connell, with a short list of his great achievements, stands near several convenient tables. If you need to stretch your legs after lunch, a short walk begins in the picnic area and takes you through the woods to the old bridge.
