Ballycarbery CastleFew kilometres outside the town, On opposite side of Ferthy River, Cahersiveen, IrelandTel: +353 66 947 2777 The ruin of this once magnificent 15th-century castle majestically faces the sea. The property was originally the seat of the MacCarthy Mor family, but passed to the O'Connells in 1350 as wardens for the MacCarthy Mors. There is a story that the powerful MacCarthy Mors sent a messenger with a cradle to the O'Connells as a sign that they should offer to foster a MacCarthy Mor child. The O'Connells' response was to send the cradle back with the head of the messenger inside. Eventually the property came into the O'Connell's hands and they prospered here for many years until the Cromwellian War. General Ludlow destroyed the castle in 1652 by continuous canon fire and the owner, Maurice O'Connell, was transplanted to Clare. Today the castle offers romantic views of the surrounding area.
