Ballykissane Pier

On Good Friday in 1916, two cars raced at high speed to reach Cahersiveen. Their mission was to rob a radio school of its equipment and set up a communication link with an arms running ship, the Aud. One of the cars took a wrong turn and went off Ballykissane Pier, killing three of the four occupants. These three men are listed as the first casualties of the Easter Rising. A monolithic monument to them stands near the pier today. It commemorates an important event in Irish history, but it is worth travelling to the pier just for the wonderful view of the River Laune.
