Skellig MichaelPortmagee, (10 miles from shore in the Atlantic Ocean), Killarney, IrelandTel: +353 66 947 6124 • Web: Visit this site » Even with the benefit of modern transport, the trip to Skellig Michael requires calm weather, steady nerves, and physical fitness. One can only imagine how monks in small curraghs managed to row their way there in a variety of conditions and then scramble up to relative safety. The sheer rock of Skellig Michael juts out of the sea to 714 feet. Winding along the cliff edges, it is easy to understand how many have fallen to their death over the centuries. This desolate place was a haven of Christianity from the 6th century and the monastic remains left there are amazingly well preserved. You must arrange your own transport via a private carrier (expect to pay about EUR30) for a two-hour visit to Skellig Michael.
