Old Slate Quarry (The)

On the northeast end of the island, Valentia Island, Ireland
Tel: +353 66 72777

Perched high up on a towering hill is Valentia Island's old slate quarry. Here, slate was hollowed out for many years, going to roof such prestigious premises as the British Parliament and Paris Opera House. When the slate ran out, so did much of the island's prosperity. The gaping cavern that was left behind now houses a religious grotto. A statue of the Virgin Mary was erected in 1954 and stands some 200 feet above the cavern floor. Most days there seems to be a continuous drip of water, but during freezing weather the scene dramatically changes. A vast array of icicles can make the place seem quite magical.
