Ballymalis Castle

This tower-house style dwelling was built at the end of the 16th century for the Ferris family. Although the roof and floors disappeared long ago, all four storeys and attic living space are clearly visible. A narrow spiral staircase still links all levels and the brave can scramble to the very top for an amazing view - but please take extreme care! If you make it that far, be sure to note the geometrical designs carved into the stone doorways. The impressive exterior features divided stone windows and bartizans with carved rams or flowers. Quite costly at the time, they displayed the Ferris family's wealth and stature. There are several defence features too. Slits in the floor of the turrets allowed hot oil or water to rain down upon invaders, while dumb-bell shaped holes in the walls were designed for musket use.
