Aghadoe Church and Round Tower

Aghadoe Church and Round Tower

Aghadoe Hill, Killarney, Ireland
Tel: +353 64 31633

This is possibly Killarney's most romantic vista. Aghadoe Hill provides a panoramic view across glistening lakes with the Macgillycuddy Reeks forming a perfect backdrop. In the evening, the floodlit Ross Castle and twinkling town lights give a different, but equally splendid sight. St. Finian Lobhar founded a monastery here in the 7th century, but the ruins of a round tower and church date from the 12th century. The church doorway has beautiful Romanesque carving, while the eastern side features a beautiful window with a head and flower at its intersection. On the south wall there is an ancient ogham stone. Outside the church stands a round tower approximately 22 feet high, built by Auliff Mor na Cuimsionach.
