Ross IslandRoss Road, Killarney, IrelandTel: +353 64 31633 Actually not an island at all, this claw-shaped peninsula provides a peaceful haven away from the bustle of town. A gentle walk of two kilometres winds through ancient woodlands and along the lakeshore. Near the water, the remains of copper mines are visible through bright blue pools. Dating back over four thousand years, these mines were last used during the Napoleonic Wars (1804-1829). The path then branches in two directions. The Governor's Rock trail ends with a panoramic vista of lake and mountain scenery. The second option, over uneven ground, leads to Library Point. Reputedly where the Chieftain O'Donoghue Ross kept his books, it must have been a rather inconvenient location. In spring the area is a riot of bluebells and wild garlic. At the end of the path a small stone jetty, still used by local fisherman, faces the pretty island known as O'Donoghue's Prison.
