When asked to name a famous writer who used to live in Leipzig, most people would think of Goethe rather than Schiller. Yet the great author, poet and playwright Friedrich Schiller (1759-1805) spent several years working here and produced classics such as Don Carlos or An die Freude while living in the (then sleepy) district of Gohlis. Situated in an old, half-timbered farmhouse, the Schillerhaus commemorates Schiller's works, and provides an overview of everyday life at the time. As such, it offers a fascinating insight German literature as well as Leipzig's local history.
