This ancient central cemetery makes for an interesting stop for two reasons: visitors can relax well away from the hustle and bustle of the city centre and at the same time learn a great deal about the past. The Alte Johannisfriedhof was first mentioned in manuscripts from the year 1278, and was initially planned as a final resting-place for lepers. Nonetheless, it was later filled by well-known members of Leipzig's high society such as Karl Tauchnitz and Franz Domenicus Grassi. Of particular interest are the baroque and rococo monuments.
