Daniel O'Connell Memorial ChurchChurch Street, Killarney, IrelandTel: +353 66 947 2210 Designed by George Ashlin in 1875, this church was built to mark the centenary of Cahersiveen's most celebrated son. It is the only church in Ireland dedicated to a layperson. Its inception and construction was fraught with controversy. Despite refusal from the Bishop of Kerry, the local canon received a papal sanction for the church. Once approved, all of the stone for the church was brought from Newry. This enormous expense bankrupted both the project and the builder. The church lacks a steeple for this reason, though a very impressive one was included in the plans. It is an interesting mixture of styles: predominately French Gothic, with medieval round turrets and steep conical caps.
