The EL-DE-Haus, the Nazi documentation centre, is both an exhibition and a memorial. In this building, which remains almost unaltered, the Gestapo, the Secret Police of the infamous Nazi regime, had their headquarters from 1935 to 1945. Forced labourers, Jews, Sinti and Roma, homosexuals and so-called enemies of the regime were kept under guard and dragged away into the cells, where these prisoners of the Gestapo feared for their lives. Today, this building is a memorial to the victims of Fascist terror in Germany. It was opened in 1981. In 1987 the Nazi documentation centre was also opened, featuring the permanent exhibition Cologne under National-Socialism.
