The year in which the foundations of the Kolner Dom were laid was also the year in which construction began on the Minoritenkirche St Maria Empfangnis. The Minoritenkirche, in stark contrast to the huge and famous cathedral, is a perfect example of the beauty found in simplicity. The values of the Franciscans, who settled in Cologne in 1229, are mirrored in the architecture of the church. Reconstruction of the church after the Second World War continued and enhanced its simplistic style.
