Haus am Hanen

Alter Markt 24, Altstadt, Cologne, Germany

The Kallendresser vom Alder Markt, a figure of fun who would do his "business" in the Regenrinne (Kalle) with his exposed behind hanging from the Haus zur Sonne. This house was located at the perimeter of the neutral territory occupied by the Benedictine abbey. The monks apparently handed over a criminal so that he would be brought to justice, even though he had sought sanctuary with them. Legend has it that the inhabitants of the Alter Markt, reacted to this incident by deploying the Kallendresser, who would expose his backside to the monks as they walked by. Today, a new Kallendresser hangs from Am Hanen Haus. The original figure was destroyed in the War. The present one is a creation of Ewald Matare, who also designed the Kallendresser Order placards. This is how Cologne honours those who have made a particularly significant contribution to the city.
