The Hauptstrasse (Main Street) leads from the Bismarckplatz across the Old town to the Karlstor. The first two thirds of the lively Hauptstrasse is a pedestrian area. No cars, no trams, perfect for a stroll! Actually you will find the longest shopping mile in Germany! This even in the true sense of the word as, indeed, the length is an English mile. More than a third of Heidelberg's shops feature on the Hauptstrasse and its side streets. There is a large choice of snack bars and cafes or dignified restaurants, and all kinds of shops, where useful, expensive, antique, tasty, cheap, noble items and junk are sold. Culture and thought also appear here: the Kurpfalzische Museum offers culture and history. The Zimmertheater and the Stadttheater (town theatre) are worth a visit in the evening. The Old university with its varied buildings is near the Hauptstrasse and behind the Marktplatz and Kornmarkt the Volkerkundemuseum(ethnology museum) is housed in the Palais Weimar. Why not stroll along the side streets? With narrow alleys and ivied houses they contribute to Heidelberg's charm and romance.
