Otto Wagner's Stadtbahn Pavillions

Karlsplatz, Vienna, Austria

On the northern side of Karlsplatz, opposite the Kunstlerhaus, lie Otto Wagner's two modernist U-Bahn pavillions, built at the turn of the century. Originally located either side of the neighbouring street, they look a little forlorn today amidst the chaos of Karlsplatz, but on closer inspection, they bear all the hallmarks of Viennese Jugendstil or Art Nouveau: the use of modern materials such as steel, aluminium and glass, organic motifs and luxurious gilding. You can take a coffee in one of them and admire the original fittings. The other is used as an annexe of the nearby Historical Museum of Vienna.
