Mozarts Wohnhaus

Mozarts Wohnhaus

Makartplatz 8, Salzburg, Austria
Tel: +43 662 87422740

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart lived in this house on Makartplatz 8 for just seven years, from 1773 to 1780, to be exact. The building was destroyed in World War II and rebuilt in 1996. Nowadays, its the second most important Mozart museum in Salzburg. The rooms on the first floor present not only the life of the Mozart family in this house, but also the history of the building. This site is not as interesting as Mozart's birthplace in the Getreidegasse, however it's worth visiting.

admission: adults EUR 6; children EUR 1,50; families EUR 14; additionally there are combined tickets with Mozart's birthplace.

  • Best you can find outside a state museum.
  • Nothing to dislike.

“I disagree with the MyTravelGuide note that it's not as good as the Birth House. It is in fact considerably better. The exhibits here are largely original items, connected with Mozart, including several instruments that belonged to him, a large display of letters from Wolfgang and Leopold, and some original manuscripts. By comparison, most of the stuff in the Birth House is copy, and there are several modern art displays that have no relationship to Mozart whatsoever (including, when I visited, a room full of engraved prints displayed upside down, a new mechanical model of Mozart shooting his dog (read the biogs to find out how much he loved his fox terrier) and some blue peppier mache geese - perhaps they appeal to our brethren west of the Atlantic). By comparison, the Downhauls is a treasure of articulate and intelligent exhibits, well thought out and vastly more interesting to those who want to see at first hand something of the Mozart's' lives, friends and music.”
