Hiram M. Chittenden Locks (Ballard Locks)3015 NW 54th St, Seattle, WATel: (206) 783-7059 • Web: Visit this site » Conceived as soon as the first white settlers came in the 1850s and finished in the 1930s, these two locks go up and down on a regular basis, letting pleasure craft, fishing boats and tour vessels through. Crowds come here to see the boats, to watch the salmon using the fish ladder (and the sea lions that come to eat them) and to stroll through the adjacent gardens. The locks and gardens are open daily, but the visitor center is only open on weekends in the winter.

“The boats come. The boats stop. The water goes up on one side and down on the other or vice versa. The boats go again. In a sense, if you've seen one set of locks, you've seen 'me all, and judged against that scale, the Ballard Locks are meant for only the truly desperate-for-attractions tourist. On the other hand, the gardens are pretty, and if you find yourself in the area, it's a decent place to just kick around and do nothing in for a half hour or so.” 5 of 16 people found this review helpful.Popular Attractions in SeattleView all attractions in Seattle
