Fort Saint-Jean

Rue de la Poudrière, Lyon, France

During his reign, Louis 12 decided to fortify Lyon and had a number of forts built around the city one of which was St Jean (middle of 16th century). To give the garrisons easy access a road was built, which is now called "la montee de la butte" is still used today to reach the fort (it leads to rue de la Poudriere). The fort was built to protect the population of Lyon but its history is not very glorious as it was the origin of local popular uprisings that spread to many French cities after the July revolution in Paris in 1830. Croix-Rousse, the silk workers' neighbourhood, was threatened when the authorities in Lyon re-armed the fort in 11831 to calm down the workers.
