Loggia dei Mercanti o di BanchiPiazza Banchi, Genoa, ItalyTel: +39 0105574700 Built between 1589 and 1595 following Andrea Ceresola's design, in front of the Chiesa di S.Pietro in Banchi, is one of the most representative buildings of Renaissance Genoa. It was originally a covered market on the site of the ancient S. Pietro in Banchi market (the place name is in fact linked to market activity), and is made up of a single, large, rectangular room, edged by coupled columns and glass doors. Nowadays it is used as an exhibition centre. The Genoese proudly remember that the first Italian Stock Exchange began life here in 1855 before being transferred to the Palazzo della Nuova Borsa in Piazza De Ferrari. It is only open to the public when exhibitions are taking place.
