Eglise Reformee de la rue MagueloneRue Maguelone, Montpellier, FranceTel: +33 4 67 92 19 27 The first Protestant church in Montpellier was erected during the late 16th century on the site of what is now Place Chabanneau. Reputed as one of the most beautiful Protestant churches of its time, it was pulled down in 1682 after the city once more came under Catholic domination. The current church in Rue Maguelone, facing Planchon Square, was inaugurated in 1870. This monumental structure is clearly inspired by Romanesque architecture. The cross-shaped interior, with its austere decor and emphasis on acoustics, meets the demands of Protestant liturgy. Unfortunately, the building is closed for over half the year, only opening its doors for summer services and special events.
