Halle aux GrainsPlace Richelme, Aix-en-Provence, FranceThis Italian-inspired building was built between 1759 and 1761 to plans by Georges Vallon, the town architect. The north facade features a sculpture by Chastel representing the Rhone and the Durance Rivers, the two sources of Provence's prosperity. By the south face lies Place Richelme with its typical Provencal market, beneath a facade richly decorative with motifs of fruit, olives and cereals. The great historical significance of the trade in wheat and cereals is represented in this allegory dedicated to the fruits of nature.
