Cementerio de Mallona

Cementerio de Mallona

Calzadas de Mallona, Bilbao, Spain

Climbing from the Casco Viejo (Old Quarter) through the Calzadas de Mallona we reach what was in the past one of the most important religious architectural features of Bilbao. Of the old cemetery all that remains today is the arched entrance, which features Doric intercolumniation and was built by Juan Benavista in 1828. Upon it there is an inscription which reads "Here ends the pleaure of the unjust and begins the glory of the good". Today the cemetery's grounds are occupied by a football pitch (Mallona's), and by a landscaped area that connects with the Echevarria Park. The Vista Alegre cemetery, in the Derio municipality, is today the principal resting place for the city and its surrounding areas.
