Ara Pacis

Lungotevere in Augusta, Rome, Italy
Tel: +39 0636003471

The altar, commissioned by the Senate following pacification work launched by Emperor Augustus, dates from 9 BC. The first panels were found in 1500 and ended up in Paris and Florence. Made from marble and beautifully sculpted, probably by Greek artists, the panels formed an enclosure around a base with an altar in the centre. The figures are from the imperial family. Restoration work was begun in 1938. Now the altar is protected by a glass covering.

  • Great location.
  • Horrible service and tiny rooms that don't look anything like the pictures

“We had a confirmed reservation, but when we arrived, they told us they would have to send us across town to another hotel because they had no rooms. The staff person assured us that the other hotel was "much nicer," and pointed to a spot on the map near the city center. They said they had "made special arrangements with this other hotel to take us in.ż Much to our dismay, the other hotel wasn't much nicer, and even worse, it was located in a totally different part of town than they claimed. We were very disappointed because we could have easily stayed in this much less popular part of town for much less money. The next night, we insisted on being sent back to the Hotel Ari Pacis. They stuck us in a tiny room with broken air conditioning I travel all the time, and Iżve stayed in low budget hotels in the past, but this was by far the worst hotel Iżve ever had in any part of the world. If I were to take a guess, this hotel actually owns the other hotel. The Ari Pacis overbooks intentionally because it's at a lower price point. The other hotel (The Hotel Borromeo) may be under the same umbrella ownership. It's at a higher price point though, so the owners of the Ari Pacis may simply overbook the cheaper hotel, and then send the excess guests across town to the other hotel. If you have to pay more for a comparable hotel in the area, stay in the other hotel. It'll save you a lot of headache and hassle.”
