First Baptist Church in America75 North Main St, Providence, RITel: (401) 454-3418 This striking edifice at the bottom of College Hill facing downtown Providence was built in 1774 and 1775, but the congregation was actually formed in 1638 by religious freedom advocate, Roger Williams. Williams was credited with founding Rhode Island for white Europeans. The building is a historic landmark, offering services at 11am on Sunday mornings. Because of the grandeur, significance and location of the church, it is also used for other special functions, including part of the graduation ceremonies of Brown University, which is located nearby.
