Fuente de la HispanidadPlaza del Pilar, Zaragoza, SpainThis fountain was erected in 1991, just after the Pilar Square - also called the Cathedrals Square - was remodelled. It was built with the purpose of glorifying the Hispanic world. On the 12th of October - Columbus Day -, Zaragoza celebrates the festivity of Our Lady Pilar. This is the reason why the Virgin Pilar became the patron saint of the Hispanic world. The fountain represents a map of Latin America: in the upper left part you can see a hole that symbolizes the Yucatan Peninsula and Central America. The north part of South America is embodied by a waterfall, and a pond stands for the rest of the continent as far as Tierra de Fuego.
