Monumento a Fernando el CatolicoPlaza San Francisco, Zaragoza, SpainIn the middle of Plaza San Francisco stands the statue dedicated to the King of Aragon, Fernando II. He was a crucial player in the history of Aragon, Spain and Europe owing to his politics: he married the Castilian heir Isabel, and their daughters married European kings: Henry VIII of England, Manuel I of Portugal, Philippe the Handsome, heir of Burgundy and of the German Empire. He also took part in Italian politics and contributed to the "discovery" of America. He was the model for Machiavelli's "The Prince". Here he can be seen holding his sword in one hand and a parchment in the other. Work in bronze by Juan de Avalos (1969).
