Iglesia de San Benito

Plaza del Corrillo, Salamanca, Spain
Tel: +34 923 222514

This attractive parish church was built in 1104 with a covered Gothic facade and it stands in a peaceful square opposite the Cafe Corrillo. The interior houses numerous forbidding tombs that give it a funerary air and you'll find the Fonseca family coat-of-arms hanging from the walls. It was Archbishop Fonseco of Santiago de Compostella who had the church rebuilt. The church is famous because it was used as a place of refuge by one of the rival noble groups who terrorrized the city during their power struggles in the 15th century. They play good jazz music in the Cafe Corrillo, by the way.
