The assassination of President Abraham Lincoln here on April 14, 1865, overshadowed this theater for most of its history. Ford's opened just four years before that fateful night. Restored to its 1865 appearance, Ford's is again a showcase for plays. The basement-level Lincoln Museum displays artifacts from the assassination, including the gun John Wilkes Booth used to kill Lincoln. Mementos from Lincoln's life also are on display. National Park Service rangers give talks 15 minutes after the hour. Across the street is Petersen House, the house where Lincoln died. Admission is free.

  • Fascinating historical site.
  • If on a tight time schedule, the plays can interfere with your visit.

“The level of care and attention to detail taken to restore this theater to its original configuration and condition is exceptional. The opportunity to see the spot where Lincoln was shot is awesome and I'm so grateful this building is not lost to history forever. The museum in the basement, which contains some incredible items (the pistol used to shoot Lincoln, the clothing and boots worn by the president that night, Booth's dagger, etc.) is absolutely fascinating. If you visit D.C., this is an historical "must-see".”
