Thomas Jefferson Memorial

900 Ohio Dr SW, (Tidal Basin), Washington, DC
Tel: (202) 426-6841 Web: Visit this site »

Designed by John Russell Pope, this Roman-style monument to Thomas Jefferson, the nation's third president and author of the Declaration of Independence, is elegant and simple. Jefferson's 19-foot statue stands within, surrounded by some of his most inspirational writings. This is a perfect after-dinner destination. At night, the view of the Washington Monument across the tidal basin is one of the most attractive in Washington, especially when the cherry blossoms are in bloom. Admission is free.

  • It's a very nice monument with a beautiful view. It's worth seeing at least once in your life.
  • It is terribly inconvenient to get to. There isn't any public transportation within a mile of the place, and it's just not worth the walk.

“I have mixed feelings about the Jefferson memorial. I've been there once, but I don't think I will ever return. It has a lovely view, and it always looks great on postcards. But be warned that the postcards don't show you the murky water, the paddle boats covering it, the street people living on the park benchs, or just how long the hike is to get to the memorial. If you are coming from the National Mall, you will be pretty darn tired by the time you see Jefferson in his palace, perhaps too tired to appreciate it. There aren't any close metro stops so you will have to hike the whole trip no matter how you do it, unless you are in a tour bus. If you do plan to go all the way down to see Jefferson, make sure you take the western route back to Lincoln. Nestled between the Basin and the Potomac you will find the Roosevelt (FDR) memorial. It's a very unique type of memorial and I doubt many people see it - most seem to just stumble across it. I did. But it's worth it. ”
