El Rio Neighborhood Center Murals1390 West Speedway Blvd, Tucson, AZCreated by artists Antonio Pazos, David Tineo and many others, these murals on the exterior walls of the neighborhood center document as well as celebrate the Chicano movement of the 1970s and its impact on Tucson's Hispanic community and on social consciousness. In 1970, Mexican-American families requested that land at the site be set aside for a community center. After several non-violent demonstrations that drew widespread attention to the issue, the city of Tucson ordered El Rio Neighborhood Center to be built and enhanced with exterior murals. In 1997, the city council commissioned additional murals for the main lobby.
